Governor's Partnership Council on Corrections
Public Safety and Homeland Security
Purpose
The Council was created to strengthen collaboration between the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) and the communities it serves. The Council exists to:
- Elevate community-informed solutions that enhance public safety, rehabilitation, and reentry outcomes while supporting responsible fiscal management.
- Provide structured, ongoing stakeholder input on corrections policy and operations.
- Advise executive leadership on policy, programmatic, and operational improvements.
- Strengthen transparency and trust between VADOC and the public.
Term
At the pleasure of the Governor
Composition
The Council shall be comprised of no more than 18 members from the following backgrounds:
- Community/Advocacy Representatives (Community Organization Representative): Criminal justice reform organizations, reentry service providers, and faith-based groups working in corrections
- Lived-Experience Voices (Justice System Experience Representative): Formerly incarcerated individuals, family members of incarcerated individuals, corrections officers and probation officers
- Victim Advocacy (Victims Rights Advocate) : Victims’ rights advocates and victims or family members of victims of crime
- Corrections Leadership (no more than 1/3 of total Council membership): Reentry leadership, community corrections leadership, facility leadership, and executive leadership
- Public Safety Partners: Police chief, sheriff, or regional jail representative
Vacant Seats
The seat descriptions indicate if there is a specific requirement for that seat (a profession, consumer, someone who lives in a certain congressional district, etc.). If there is only a number listed (Seat 7), there is no specific criteria for that seat. A “citizen” seat requires someone who is not affiliated with that profession.
